White House: Countries can avoid 232 tariffs via ‘alternate’ ways to address national security

The president’s proclamations on steel and aluminum tariffs -- set to kick in 15 days from their signing on Thursday -- will include an initial, limited exemption for Canada and Mexico and provide a way for other countries to dodge the tariffs if the U.S. agrees to “alternative means to address the threat to national security” caused by steel and aluminum imports, a senior administration official said.
