India wants wide-ranging exemptions in WTO fisheries talks
India last week proposed exemptions to restrictions on fisheries that would apply to all developing and least-developed World Trade Organization members and allow them to subsidize some fishing activities that occur up to 200 miles offshore, without restriction. The proposal met resistance from some WTO members, however. They claimed the exemptions would create loopholes that would undermine efforts to ban harmful fisheries subsidies, according to a Geneva-based trade official.
