Citing USMCA, Rep. Higgins urges Tai to raise Canadian housing tax in meetings this week

A proposed Canadian tax on “underused housing” could violate the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Rep. Brian Higgins (D-NY) told U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai this week, urging her to raise the issue in meetings with her Canadian counterpart. In a May 4 letter to Tai, Higgins said Canada’s proposed tax on underused housing violates the USMCA’s non-discrimination principles.
